I was working the old girl and was boxblading the road and some rough patches and made her pop a wheelie and come back down slight hard. I working her hard and it sounded like she was low on gas but idled fine. Went another 50' and she sputtered and popped. (backfire)?? Well she wouldn't start and had to leave it right where she stopped. Walked out this morning and she started up. What would cause this 6v front mount stributer with new points, condenser and rotor button to fail?

Your new condenser is suspect.Put the old one back on.No metal transfer on the points, leave the old one in place. My tractor is on year 15 with the same condenser.Viton tip needle valves are good at sticking shut.Never mind what the sellers claim.

My guess is carb / fuel related..

Heres what tractors have taught me over the years.Fuel problems, engine skips, recovers a bit then skips and stops. My John Deere is an all fuel tractor, magneto, no shut off switch.Turn off the fuel and it idles for a long time. When the fuel bowl gets near empty the engine will skip then run smooth for a few seconds, back fire several times and stop.I usually turn the fuel off before I get the parking spot.Ignition failure, usually instant shut down although a bad condenser may make it skip and back fire.Broken point spring, instant shut down.Oxides building up on point surfaces ,instant shut down.clean points with a pocket knife, runs again.Hay baler plugs, stalls the engine, wont start until you choke it. Look at ammeter when cranking, no pointer wiggle, check the points.Points can get very hot, dont touch with fingers.Drive off without opening gas valve,Now you know how the engine acts without fuel.Stiil amazed at what some tractor owners dont know.

I think you are replying to the wrong person. i'm not the guy with the non running tractor.

i also know the difference between an electrical open that causes a dead stop.. and a sputtering run on that finally pops and dies when it starves out lean.

I did rebuild the carb last week. The only thing i checked was spark and there was none yesterday when it backfired. I remember looking if the coil came loose and would have noticed water /coolant at that time. I will run it some more tomorrow and check if it does it again without the stun show.

There is no coolant leak present and oil is black. Ill check the axle and centerpin later.

But did you look for the coolant this morning or yesterday when it stopped on you?? If you did it this morning then it would have drained off and you would not see it and that could well be what happened. You may have got a little coolant in the distubutor and it shorted out on you and this morning its now dry. That wheelie may have sent a little fluid out the over flow tube then it hit the fan and that threw it on the distubutor

In addition to what Bob said about coolant, you could have a loose king pin; popping a wheelie could have broken the cap if the axle hit it.

Gotta agree with you there, Bruce, about the broken cap being a likely suspect after a "jumping tractor" incident. But, how did it "heal itself"? He doesn't mention making any repairs, and the next day, it started!

One other thing... if there's a few drops of water in the bottom of the carburetor float bowl, some could have sloshed into the jet system, POSSIBLY setting back to the bottom overnight.

Instead of breaking or cracking the cap, it could have just jarred it loose. But, your water scenario is more plausible. Bad king pins usually crack the #2 nipple.

Did some coolant get slobbered on the distributor?
