The company I work for is trying to buy a tractor to haul around an 8000 pound boat/trailer. The tractor we choose also has to be able to launch the boat down a 10 degree slope boat ramp. I would love to tell my boss to let me bring in my ol" 8n but I think we need something a little more heavy duty :( We are also looking for something with a decent turning radius. I hate to ask on this forum, but if anyone can give me some good advise, it"s you fine folks here. Thanks alot!!

Get a US built tractor. Which are those? Most John Deere's... see list below.
John Deere (johndeere.com)
Farm, Lawn & Garden Tractors
Most tractors built in North America. All large Ag Tractors (7000, 8000 and 9000 Series both tires or tracks) built in Waterloo, Iowa. 4000, 5000 Series, 790 & 990 as well as Advantage Series 5105 & 5205 built in Augusta, GA. Lawn & Garden Tractors built in Horicon, Wisconsin.

6000 Series built in Mannheim, Germany.

6403 & 6603 built Satillio Mexico. (per johndeere.com cust serv email 11-24-01) (Why not made in Saipan?)

Wanna find other products made in USA and not simply re-packaged / re-labelled foreign junk ?

I'd go with a ford 4000 or 5000.

Yep.. and tie the traction disconnect down.

Double safety of the sos is if the trans failed while backing into the water.. the tractor would just lock and set there!

Either the 8spd or the 10 spd, and the larger tractor will make a much safer boat tender.. plus the 4000/5000 have better brakes.. and the weight to put the hp to use.. etc.

Fords 10 speed transmission. came out around 1959 and went till about 75 i guess. Think of it as a 'power-shift' tranny. Select-O-Speed

Could have independent pto ( some models had 2 speed ), and 2 rev gears.

Earlt models were plauged with problems that more or less gave the trans a permanent black eye. Many were feild repaired or recalled, but the early problems coupled with the lack of knowledgable mechanics to repair them, in existance today, and parts becomming harder to find has relegated them to virtually 'hobbiest-support'. ( plenty of knowledgable people hear can help guide someone thru a diagnosis and repair if they have the sorrect manual.. however it's hard to find a mechanic that will work on them. if you do find one.. the price can be huge.. IE.. upwards of 2000$ or more. Thus the machines usually command less $ at sale than a similar with a gear trans.. like an 8spd... which is by comparison.. fairly bulletproof.

If you find a good running OS and it has been maintained well.. it generally will continue to run good as long as maintenance is kept up on it.. etc.

Why not a 1 ton truck? How far is the boat going to be hauled? Is that going to be its only purpose in life? (hauling a boat?

I used my older N as a backup for a bigger tractor at our marina while repairs were being made. SCARY! With the tractors available today, I would suggest the following items:
1. 8000 lb boat = tractor in that weight range
2. Hydramatic transmission for quick manuvering (or at least syncro-shift)
3. R-4 tires for long wear
4. 4 wheel drive
5. Hitch attached to 3 point lift (a lifesaver)

There are lots of off brand tractors with good engines and starting reliability. You won't need power, you'll need braking, manuverability and reliability. (Experience talking here)

Sorry...thought you were talking about more than one boat.
