BALL BEARING

Restored my "42 N and parked it in my lean-to shed for about a year. Every time we had a big temperature change and some humidity, the tractor would "sweat" like it was out in the rain. Now the rust is coming through on the cast iron. Can I reprime and topcoat over my first paint job without stripping? I just can"t face that job again. (I will burn the shed soon.)
Thank you. BB

Spent the night aboard the USS LEXINGTON about a year ago. It is a real shame to see so many holes rusted thru that grey metal near the passageways. But there is no longer young sailors to scrape the rust off, just volunteers I suppose to paint over it , and maintain as best they can. The ship and our tractors are probably close in age.

Keep in mind that primer is NOT a sealing coat, unless you use primer/sealer. Primer alone absorbs moisture from the air, and since it is pourus, the metal underneath will rust. There are some good spray-on liquids that will get rid of the rust and put a thin rust-preventative coat on the metal. Go to a shop that specializes in automotive paint and ask them. They will have an easy solution to your delima.

My experience, paint over rust just compounds the problem.

good paint = good primer.

Any place that you have rust come thru.. take it down to clean metal, then reprime that aire, and repaint.
