After letting it sit for a few years, I cleaned up the ignition system and got my 9N running. The engine sounds great but I can't get it in gear when the engine is running. The gears worked fine when I stopped using it a few years ago. I checked the hydraulic fluid and it was about empty so I installed five gallons. I can go through all of the gears when the tractor isn't running, but when it is running, I can't get it in any gear. All that happens is a loud grinding noise when I move the shifter. I can push the tractor when it is in neutral. The clutch pedal appears to be adjusted correctly. I was going to play with the adjusting rod and clevis but I couldn't break them loose. Any suggestios that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Yep.. I agree.. flywheel is probably rusted to clutch..

block clutch down.. after a couple days.. try it.. if nothing.. leave clutch blocked.. push out in the open.. put in 1st gear, and find a way to start it in gear. Not as easy as an 8n that has a solenoid.. though a remote starter switch.. or a temporary addition of a solenoid will help.. then drive in figure 8's with the clutch blocked, stomping on the 'outside' break when making the turns... that should pop her loose.

Also.. if you have a mower, you can try starting in neutral, with clutch blocked, with pto engaged... sometimes the shock load busts them loose... just make sure you have blade clearance from the ground... remember.. you can manually raise your 3pt lift by disengaging it, raising your lift lever, and then spinning the pto shaft with a screwdriver stuck thru the 'hole' int he shaft.. or with a pipe wrench or vice grips clamped on it as a handle... pump don't care if you are turning it.. or the engine... if the pump works and it is turned, and the 3pt handle is up.. the lift will come up.

BoB Gee,I think that your clutch disk is stuck to the flywheel. You might try blocking the clutch petal down a day or so.Try it again,if its still stuck you might try to start it in gear by shorting the start button post while on the seat.Start it in neutral first to let the engine warm up,shut down then restart in 2nd gear.Be prepaired to take off,2nd gear would be best to start it in to get the clutch to break free.Once its running and moving hold the clutch down and apply the right brake.Try stomping the brake on and off with the clutch down, kind of jurking it. If that don't do it post back, youll have to pull the starter.

Clutch disk is rusted to the flywheel/pressure plate. Ways to fix it is get it out in the open and start it up in gear and drive it around till it pops free. Remember you can not stop till it does so be sure you have lots of room that is safe to drive it around. Also block the pedal down for a few days sometimes works but not often. You can also pull the starter off and spray the clutch with brake cleaner and some times that will do it.
