The original subject was "Ford 8N Starting Problem".

I just replaced the solonoid on my 8N. it cranks and attempts to start but will only stay running if I hold down the starter button. There is an electrical disconnect somewhere. Can you help.
Thanks

Maybe this will make it eaiser to understand what we are saying.

Dunk, it took your colored diagram for me to see the light.
Thanks for being there.

In my "Right" diagram here, the wire that goes to the switch (or maybe to the junction block, is not shown, a smaller wire, about the size of the one that goes to the push button start switch) it hooks on the Bat side of the solenoid, NOT the starter side of the solenoid.

If it was on the starter side of the solenoid, it would cause the condition you posted about, the coil would only be hot when the starter was running.

As Dunk said,The correct solenoid has three terminal posts. You need to make sure that the wire from the battery and the wire going to the amp meter or your ignition switch are on the same post of the solenoid.

If I understand this post... (I am not sure why we are replying to 2003 posts)

The wire from the solenoid to the switch is on the wrong side of the solenoid. It should be on the BAT side, not on the starter side.

the solonoid has only one lug to put the wire on. it looks just like the old one.
