We're putting a starter drive (Tisco) on our 8n. This is one of those "it's not my fault" things. Somewhere along the way the drive spun out and now does not return. How do we put things back where they belong?

You do realize that 'out' at the end of the shaft is where it normally sets.. and that it 'sucks in' toward the starter to engage the BACK of the flywheel/ringear.

If that is what you meant.. then you can do a couple things...

1, with enough fidgiting.. many people find they can get it installed like that anyway...

2, lock the case in a vice and use a wire wheel cup on a drill and spin (overspeed) the drive back out..

I installed it with the gear spun out. The tractor started but the gear did not retract and you could hear the starter spinning. This is a new bendix. I figured out how to spin it in. I had to remove a lock ring on the end and let the spring push the drive gear-cup off. There is a little spring that pushed a tiny cup down through a hole in the outer shaft into the groove of the inner shaft and will not let it spin in. (It will come flying out so be careful you don't lose it). I then spun it in and put the whole thing in a vice and reinstalled the small spring-cup and the lock ring. When you do this be careful with the little spring so you don't get it caught and bend it. As a sidebar, when I reinstalled it I either got the starter on crooked or some foreign object fell into the starter case. The result was a ruined starter winding. So, now I will be starting over with a new starter and bendix. I will let you know how it goes.

I'm quite familiar with the dog and groove setup.

No real way to get the starter in crooked.. so must have been a foreign object..

Thanks for the response. So is it ok to put the starter back the way it is, meaning, will the starter drive disengage? By the way, we did get the starter in.

I think I have the same problem. I replaced the bendix and let it spin out. Now it is locked and will not spin closed. Can I install it with the bendix spun out?

BMC..... ...iff'n you got the starter motor "in", then guess what? you got the starter gear into the ring teeth. Just try and start yer engine. The FASTER running speed of a started engine "spins-back" the starter Bendix to the end of the starter shaft where it is "stored" until the next time you crank yer engine. Simple, eh?

Iff'n you are still un-convinced, and really think you need to "retract" yer starter Bendix, a very thin "electronics" screwdriver blade can sometimes "jimmy" the 1-way pawl teeth so you can manually "un-spin" the Bendix.

BTW, you ain't the "first" to muck-up the Bendix drive, and won't be the last either. BTDT

TIP: take a wire wheel/brush and BRUSH the starter motor endplate-tranny hole gap clean before you screw them 8in bolts (8ft/lbs) to hold the starter in place. 6-volt starters really NEED GROUNDS..... ..Dell
