How can I prevent the rust which occures shortly after electrolosis? These are pieces (or places) that don't get painted. Thanks BB

Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed a lot of folks on this board have interests in flying and/or old Volkswagens besides old iron tractors.

Probably just me... ;o)

BB.....I can vouch for phosphoric acid, especially if the pieces are not perfectly rust-free. If you don't want to handle the acid, another product works well too, Penetrol. You'll find it in the paint stores or Depot, etc. It can be painted over later as well.

On the nastyness scale.... phosphoric acid is what is in Coca-Cola (and why Coke will ruin a gun's finish.)

Similarly to the hydrochloric we make in our digestive tracts naturally.

Got mine from Lowes or Menards or Home Depot (don't remember which).

Look on the shelf for concrete cleaning products.

You can get the fancy-schmacy "marketed" products for $20 or so, but the main active ingredient is just phosphoric acid. I get mine at Home Depot in the paint section next to the other chemicals like Acetone and such. It is call Phosphoric Plus and runs about $13 A GALLON! I put it in a spray bottle and am ready to go. I have coated hundreds of objects and only through half of that same gallon I bought a few years back.

Oh - and I have coated objects with this stuff over a year ago and put it on a shelf - with no recurring rust.

HTH,
Dan

Thanks Dan, just the info I needed. Is Phosphoric nasty?

Others may dissagree - but on a scale of 1-10 for "nastyness" I would give it a 5. It will burn your skin if it sits on it for too long, but I have had carb cleaner that burns worse.

Phosphoric works great, but not indefinitely (maybe a few months).

Ask me how I know...

I will shortly be derusting my tractor for the third time. Hopefully I'll actually get it together and painted this time!

I like phosphoric acid. It quickly kills the flash rust and coats the metal to keep it from rusting again. I keep it is a spray bottle and coat just about any metal after I clean it. As a bonus - you can paint right over it.

If these are piece that you need to store after rust removal, you can always hit them with an oil of grease / fluid film.. then clean them up later for painting.... if they are pieces that will never get paint.. what about clear coating them?
