49 8n sn 174000. the tractors housing area where the four bolts go in looked to be plugged or something. no bolts to take out. was the swinging draw bar not an option this early in 49? is so, how can I get the bolts in because obviously there is something hard in the holes. this is the LOWER plate not the plate around the pto.

well i figured i would inquire about the grade of bolt since i have to know things. at any rate, i got the new c tines on the quacker today and adjusted the tines to be evenly spaced instead of looking like a 70's hockey player.

tomorrow, i will be poking at the crud in them holes then i'll use my handy dandy digital caliper and see how deep them holes are. pokin a lil today showed me whatever is in there is not too soft. i'll figure it out then post a pic of the new setup.

thanks gents

Ward, they had a swinging draw bar that mounted to a carrier around the Pto shaft simular to the one on the 600-4000 series and pinned in the three point drawbar. I've only seen 2 of these, and don't know if you can buy reproductions or not. But they are pretty light duty compared to the belly mount one. John

One would think that would be "intuitively obvious", huh?

Wardie..... ....the under-the-diffy swinging drawbar mount should have 4-blind 3/4"-10 holes 1-in deep. They did NOT come pre-installed. Don't use too long bolts to hold yer swinging drawbar clevis holder, 'cuz you'll pop the diffy case and leak all over the place. It is not unusual for MUD to be hard packed in these holes and you will haffta pick'em clean. They are in a square pattern, about 6in x 4in..... ...Dell

alright then is there a grade of bolt? something that will snap off(in case of emergency)instead of blowing out the diffy housing?

Award..... ..Kossuth is correct, the 3/4" bolts are MUCH stronger than your castiron diffy and yer diffy will break before enny 3/4" bolt breaks.

Yer worrying about sumptin that don't normally worry about. But iff'n you want a "shear pin" scheme, consider how the cranked swinging drawbar is "pinned" to the under the diffy mount. Its a 7/8" pin. You could change the material that pin is made from, to say aluminum or maybe even weaker, wooden dowel. I haffn't gotta clue what the "shear" spec of 7/8" wooden dowel would be. Simple, eh?..... ....Dell, who took materials strength class 50yrs ago

reguardless of grade of bolt it will probiably crack the housing. Just use the length of bolt and all should be well. I recommend getting a tap the size of the bolt holes (I don't know the size off the top of my head) and using that to clean those holes out. If the dirt is really really packed in there you can take an old drill bit one size smaller than the bolt holes and go up through the dirt with it carefully. Then run the tap up through.
