I have a 1948 Ford 8N. Will I need an over-running clutch with a four foot brush hog or will it not be needed for that small a mower ?

Just my guess but I saw a cracked cam gear that I think resulted from lack of ORC. Hitting something hard slows down everything inside really fast.

B.B. Suggest you obtain an ORC. A friend put his tractor and brush hog into the river in front of his house over the top of the tractor. He was laughing while telling the story, but went on to say it was real scary not being able to control the tractor and ending up over his head in water. Get one and enjoy life. Good luck. Ron

I may be the lone dissenter, but I do not think you need an overriding clutch on your new shredder. Be a bit careful and slow when using your new shredder. The shear pin/bolt saves you money when you buy the shredder and does the job with safety.

My apologies. I confused slip clutch with overriding clutch. Bob is correct.

You ABSOLUTELY need the ORC. Unsafe without it.

Burton..... ...YES, all rotary mowers need an ORC. Due to the design of the tranny, all that spinning inertia will BACKDRIVE yer tractor when you clomp yer clod-hoppers on the clutch pedal to slow down to go around the barn corner, fencepost, litepole, creekbank, irrigation ditch, wifes car (don't ask) $60 (cheap)

Comes in 2-sizes, 1-1/8 or 1-3/8; depending upon yer tractor PTO and yer mower sliding shaft coupler. Go measure. And yes, you will haffta cut yer sliding shaft PTO drive to fit the extra length of the ORC. Not a problem. Gitt'chur ORC..... ..Dell, the ORC Safety Preacher

I say "dito" to soundguy's advice. $50-60 doesn't repair much after you fail to stop when you need to.

Get one.. the 50-65$ you spend will be chaeper than replacing a fence.. car door panel.. dog or child that runs out in front of you..

i could say it is not required and you can get by without it, but that is in theory only. i would instead say GET ONE! do a little checking into it and you will find that YES YOU NEED IT.

You dont need it for any mower, but in my opinion its foolhardy not to have it for the little price to pay and the large benefits it provides.
