Axle seals

I know this subject has been beat to death, but I didn't find all the answers in the archives. I just tore down the right side of my 48 8n. The cork gasket wasn't there and all the shims were on the out side of the brake backing plate. The manual shows shims on both side of the backing plate. Witch shims do I adjust the axle bearings with, the ones on the out side of the backing plate or the ones between the backing plate and the axle housing? or does it matter? The threads and splines on the axle were both shot so I'll have to get an axle and hub. Can't wait to see what surprises the other side will hold for me. Thanks for any help.

The shims are also seals, so you need at least one thin one on the outside of the brake backing plate.

I certainly hope you have a I&T FO-4 manual handy as it explains better than I can. What most shadetree mechanics don't understand, incorrectly shimmed, and both axles ends touch each other inside the differential, not a good thing. And it also puts a pre-load on your axle bearing, causing the bearing cage to "expand" and allows the bearings to be sloppy and wear and overheat.

Axle shims/seals are not expensive, I recommend you have a "passel" on hand to get your bearings adjusted correctly. As a general rule, too loose is better than too tight, but just right is bestest of all.

Hope this helps..... ..Dell
