Gents,
I would like to ask a question concerning my 9N Ford tractor. Can you change the steering on a 9N tractor to the calculating ball type steering used on the 8N tractors and if so how complicated of a job is it. Any info. will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much,
B.Lucas

Ditto with what llamas said.

A few years ago, I had to replace the sector gears due to worn/chipped teeth (didn't have a good dental plan). At a boneyard, I was able to find a unit that still had good sector gears. I purchased the whole sha-bang for $125. This included upper (w/dash) and lower housing, gears, pinion, the works. This stuff was off a 2N. It was not a bad deal compared to the price of new sector gears and steering pinion. Last I checked, gears = $150 ea., pinion = $85. Rope seals and bushings...trivial. Note: If you go this route, use the pinion that's with the sector gears. They seem to mate better.

Hmmm. Yes, you could do this. But it doesn't stop at just the steering box. You'd also need to exchange the dash, throttle lever mechanism, battery box and various other bits and pieces in that area, since they vary between the two models.

I'll presume that you have a 9N with damaged or worn-out steering box. I'll venture a guess that it would cost you more to upgrade to an 8N steering box (any style) than it would to buy the parts required to rebuild your existing steering box like new. Everything you need is freely available - steering sectors, pinion, new bushings and seals, and all the shims, washers and spacers required to adjust the steering system. And 8N steering boxes are not trouble-free either.

llater,

Llamas is corrrect. I have a 40 9n(25723) and a 47 8n. The 9n steers as well and as easy as the 8n. daz
