I need to replace my cam follower pin. The master parts book gives a part number of 73298-S18. The new Holland parts man has not been able to find this number. I'm trying to do this by phone and save a fifty mile trip. Does anyone have a better number or another source. If all else fails, I guess I could try Zane's trick with a valve stem but I would rather get the right part. Thanks for any help.

When I bought my 8N (about 6 months ago) The 3 point wouldn't stay where I put it. I pulled the cover and started to go through the rigging proceedure as shown in the manual when I discovered that the pin had completely worn off and all I had was a stub. I was able to drive the old pin out with a punch (had my son back me up with a steel bar). I cut a 5/16 drill blank to the appropriate length (using an abrasive wheel in a drill motor) and pressed it into place using my bench vise. The old pin mic'ed out to a hair under 5/16, but the 5/16 replacement went in without any problem. A nice tight press fit. I have used the tractor quite a bit in the last 6 months and it's working great. I love the feel of this old machine. I have used several tractors over the years, but nothing feels as comfortable as the ol' N.

Rick: Thanks for the idea. I have the linkage tore apart and last night I drove the old pin out. Just for grins I got the drill index out and started trying different bits, sure enough the 5/16 fit like a champ. Looks like we both had the same idea. I think the drill steel is hard enough to out last me.

BB..I needed to replace the pin on mine also and after much looking found no replacement..FNH said a replacement from them doesn't exist and I verified that with one other FNH dealer..Mine was worn about half the way thru..at first I thought it was supposed to be a flat on there !!..I think Zane informed me that it was supposed to be round..I looked in my parts book and it said that it was a hardened piece..I mention that because I have seen suggestions of using screws / bolts etc.and I don't think they would last too long..not to mention all that stuff that would wear away falling right into the hyd fluid..I measured it and it seemed like a standard size.. I had a piece of stainless steel that diameter and cut a piece off..it did not fit however and I think Zane again said that that was his experience also..it seems as if the hole is smaller than it should be by just a little..Thought about opening the hole a enough to make it fit ..however what I decided was to turn the pin around and let the rounded side face the cam..with the amount of work I do I figure it should last until I find a bona fide replacement..so if you do find such a thing I would sure appreciate you letting me know..
Hope this helps
Alan

Thanks to all for your suggestions. The pin is worn over half way through so I don't think turning it over work. I'll try a machine shop I will probably have to take the lift arm and shaft in to have it pressed off anyway. Again, Thanks for the help.

BB,
Try these guys. I stopped there when I was in Iowa last summer. They were VERY knowlegable about N's. I even got NEW front end loader pump parts from them.
AND tell 'em that you found out about them from the N-Board on YT. Maybe that will get them to put an add with Kim.
LOL
Larry

I'm not sure if FNH still carries that part or not, but my parts man at FNH here in Wyoming can sometimes find parts that are no longer serviced. He says there is a company that bought all the Ford Parts when Ford dumped them from the list of service parts. If you want me to, I will call and find out if he can find the part or not. Let me know.
Dave
