My First Tractor

I just bought my first tractor today -- a '49 8N. I am excited! I had gotten tired of clearing brush with my manual brushhog (meaning me, my Stihl chainsaw, and my weedeater!). I can never keep ahead of it -- plus, it seems like all I grow is anything with stickers or thorns on it (ie. locust trees, hedge, multiflora rose, poison ivy, some nasty green thorny stuff that reminds me of living razor wire, wild blackberries, etc).

A friend found the 8N for me. It had been sitting in a barn for three or four years (the owners couldn't remember for sure the last time they started it). I got it, a brushhog, a two-bottom plow, and some kind of scoop-bucket-thingy that goes on the three-point hitch. It needs some work on the engine and it is a little rough around the edges.

I've driven tractors, but never worked on one before. The same friend that found it is going to tune it up, get it running and up to speed, and show me how to work on it at the same time.

This message board is a great resource and I am sure as we work on the 8N I will come here with questions. I have already printed out the info on FAQs and the serial numbers. I also found out what the little lever under the seat is. It will be nice to go tell the guys that tomorrow -- they didn't know. Can't wait to get my 8N home tomorrow and see what the serial number is and if it is actually a '49. Thanks for all the great info!

congratulations, bari. i brought freddy, our 8n home about a year ago. i'll be watching your progress because i hope to learn from/with you. does the friend who'll get your tractor running have a brother/nephew/uncle/mother in law/cousin who lives near seattle, wa? - i'm looking for a tutor to teach me hands-on stuff. i've read the books and manuals and have had lots of great advice from the guys on the 8n board but i need a live person to teach/monitor me.

If you want to sell the "scoop-bucket-thingy" and you're reasonably close to the western US, send me an email.

CONGRATULATIONS HAVE FUN AND ENJOY Its really neat to have something that will do more than a lawn tractor. BUT BEWARE THIS IS THE WAY I STARTED now have a too small 3500 sq ft barn and a steam engine that requires a semi to move and My wife shudders when ever I mention tractor
