I have just finished rebuilding the steering gear for the second time. I replaced all three bearings on the steering shaft and tube, the bushings and seals in the sector shaft housings and adjusted it as per the manual. I was unable to adjust all of the backlash out. My problem is that the steering is VERY hard to turn. I've replaced the bearings and bushings on the spindles also. Am I missing something? $400 for a rebult steering gear is not in my budget. Any tips or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Did you notice if the ball nut rotated freely around the worm gear shaft? With the shaft removed, the nut sould spiral freely up and down as the shaft is held vertically and alternately inverted. If the nut doesn't move easily, you may need to clean or rebuild/replace it. If the nut movement is free and smooth, check the sector arm movement without the steering drag links attached. You should be able to tell if the arms are binding anywhere. Use required shims between column and steering box to adjust worm gear bering preload.

The Ball Nut seemed to be free and not binding. I believe I've got the correct preload on the worm gear. The steering gear was pretty smooth with no hard spots before I hooked up the drag links. I guess I'll diconnect the drag links and see if that will help pin point the problem. Thanks BG . If you have any more thoughts, please pass them along.

I had this problem too. If you have car radial tires on or non standard rims it will be a dog to steer. I put regulation 16 X6 rims with 3 rib Firestone steering tires on, changed the spindle bearings and carefully aligned the tires for proper toe in. Even with a dearborn loader on I can turn it around in my drive way now. Oh,I put 25 PSI in the front tires and it really helped.
