I am restoring a MH pacer and would like to paint it all at once. The problem is I would like to primer it piece by piece until I get it together to paint. Can I just use a spray paint type primer and them shoot it with a good paint or will the rattle can primer shoot my new paint job?

I recommend an epoxy sealer like PPG DPLF. It"s a great foundation to seal clean rust free metal. It seals out moisture and provides a good bond to the next layer, whether it"s filler, high build primer, or a topcoat. I also recommend PPG DCC acrylic urethane paint. It has great color holdout for years.

No. Spray can primer is low quality and may not be compatible with your topcoat. You have two choices. Use epoxy primer, which is water proof. It has a window of about 3-7 days depending on what you use. It can be covered with surfacer/primer surfacer or topcoated in that time frame. If not it has to be scuffed and reapplied or the adhesion of the next product will be poor. The other alternative is to use a rust inhibitor such as Picklex 20 (available from www.autobodystore.com). It comes in a squirt bottle, just spray on and smooth out or remove excess with a brush. Before painting remove as much residue as you can with a scotchbrite pad. It is not waterproof, but will prevent rust for months if kept dry.
