Power washed the old tractor yesterday to get ready for mechanical upgrades, blew off paint and grime. I am not ready to paint until next year. What can I use to prevent further rusting until I am ready to paint. Looking for somthing that can coat yet come off when prepping for paint. Used Oil? Rust converter?

Thanks

i would use an epoxy primer. my choice would be ep689, an rm product. oil or something like por 15 rust converter would be a pain in the butt next year when you wanted to start work on the tractor. por 15 needs a tie coat in order to get paint to stick to it, and if exposed to sunlite without paint over it will fade. 689 works great over sandblasted cast and sheet metal. and when the time comes, you can do bodywork right over it. you can also use a scotch brite pad, scuff it down and use you fill primer over it, like dp26.

If your tractor is going to be stored inside where it is dry, Picklex 20 does a great job on bare metal. Just spray it on and let it dry. It can be painted over as well. If not, glennster's recommendation is the way to go.

Go to Walmart and hit the automotive section, right where they keep the body putty they have an aerosol product called "rust convertor" spray a couple coats of it on the rusty areas and it will turn rust into a black phosphorus coating that you can sand and prime over later. It would be an excellent way to leave it through the winter until you can give it am proper finish.

WD-40 will work in this application. That's really what is was developed for, NOT as a lubricant.
Someone recently did some tests and used a variety of rust preventers. Bare stell, outside for a month. The WD-40 coated items showed the least oxidation. Prepsol will take it off next spring.
