Last step before priming

I've read a great deal of articles in the archives and think I know what I'm doing....one question, though. I'm using a rust neutralizer from Sem called Rust Mort. Just to deal with that little bit of rust in the pores and pits not removeable by wire-wheeling. The instructions say to apply 3-4 brush coats, allow to dry 24 hrs, then rinse or wipe down with a damp cloth, then prime.

Here's the question: I get the impression from my reading of the archives that a last-minute wipedown with grease and wax remover should always be the final step prior to priming. Am I right? Paul

yup, last step before hitting with a tack rag. wear disposable rubber gloves. oil from your fingers can really make problems with paint.

Thank-you! This is my first experience with spray-painting an automotive finish. I didn't want to be unsure about something and mess up! Paul

Don't wipe cast with a rag. You could leave small fibers that wont raise their ugly head until your final coat of color. BTDT unfortunately gobble

The best thing I ever did before paint or priming was a good wash with an alkylide cleaner like "Grease-Off" and water 50/50, a good srcub with a stiff brush and a good water rinse. But that's on a surface that's been setting around and has maybe been exposed to any kinds of grease. For fresh SEM rust converter just continue on without the cleaner.

Another thing and this may seem a little over the top but I've been doing it for some time now and it's worked really well for me. On bare metal, before you prime, take a weed burner torch, you know the kind that hooks up to a gas grill propane tank, and heat your work up to about 100 deg. so it sweats out all the moisture. When it cools back down to 70, then spray. That way there's no moisture under your primer.
