How long can I wait before painting?

I had the sheet metal for my SW-6 sand blasted and primed last fall. I ran out of time and weather to get the paint on. What will need to be done to get a good paint job next spring?

Leave it inside, sand and apply another coat before painting is the short version. If it was mine, depending on the primer you used, I would wait for warm weather, remove the primer, apply 2 part epoxy primer, and topcoat or preferably apply sandable surfacer within the epoxy window -- read the instruction sheet for the epoxy. Epoxy is the best primer you can use, both for sheet metal and cast. It is not sandable, it does need to be scuffed and reapplied if outside the window. A smooth surface is obtained with the sandable surfacer. Examples are PPG Omni MP170 epoxy, and Omni MP182 surfacer. The hardener for the 182 contains isocyanates, requiring a supplied air breathing system, the catalyst for the 170 does not contain isos, you need only a good charcoal mask. You can use MP181 primer surfacer over the epoxy (no hardener, thus no isos), it is not as good as 182 but can work if you don't have a lot of sanding scratches, 181 can shrink and expose the scratches, 182 won't shrink significantly. If this is not clear, more detail is available.

The primer used is a high grade industrial primer. My sand blast guy uses it on truck and trailer frames and has a good reputation with this. I [u:2a7e68ee94]will[/u:2a7e68ee94] be waiting until spring as I do not have a good ventilation system to paint when it is cold. I will be putting on IHC 2150 for the finial coats. I have had good results with this on two other tractors.
Thanks for the input.
