Just as a topic of interest, how many people prime or not prime the cast portions of thier restorations and what are the reasonings for each. I have seen it done both ways and connot see a difference in apperance. It would seem that the increased thickness of priming would increase chipping problems. Originally priming would not be done. Let me know your thoughts.

Use epoxy primer as Pat says -- two coats. You will not have chipping problem. Epoxy has a mechanical bond to the cast and a chemical bond to the topcoat. Thus you need to pay attention to the time interval between the epoxy and topcoat. It will be stated in the instructions. Tractor manufacturers were not painters, most of the factory jobs were not very long lasting.

Priming serves a few purposes. If you want to smooth the part, you will want to use a sandable primer. Priming will insure a more consistent color match. Priming helps make a good molecular bond. Also priming also seals the part and prevents "fisheye". I've found it so much easier just to go ahead and go to the trouble to prime it and save the trouble when applying top coats.
I have hardly ever prime cast iron and have never had pealing without priming.
Painted this one 12 years ago and did not prime the cast iron. I didn't take a picture of it last summer but will slip out this weekend. It never spent one night inside and still looks fair with some fading but no pealing.

I am not by any since of the word saying do not prime cast iron but have not found any long term affect for not priming.
This is after 12 years and never seen the inside of a building after it was painted.
Paint was bought from Agco when the gallon cans still said Oliver on the label. No hardener or wax. I painted a couple or more with Agco paint that just said AGCO meadow green that has stood up well also.
