I am doing my first restoration and I am currently working on stripping all the paint off.

I have read a lot on painting and I am still confused.

So what would I need to buy, to paint a farmall Super C outdoors in 60 degrees F. and I would like to end up with a "wet or shiny look" ?

I also prefer to paint with Enamel based paints.

Thanks

I painted a IH 350 for a neighbor using IH paint,He keeps it inside when hes not using it and it still looks good after 3 years

Wait until it's 70. Since you have not painted before, use CaseIH 2150. It is supposed to be an acrylic modified alkyd enamel, meaning it won't fade as fast as the older alkyd enamel. Next step up is acrylic enamel, 2150 converts to PPG 71310/DuPont 96766. Next step up from that is acrylic urethane, which requires a supplied air breathing system because it must have hardener. Acrylic enamel can usually be used without hardener. The change is cost from CaseIH 2150 to the cheaper urethanes is probably $100+/gallon. I think the "wet look" is overrated, I have never seen a wet look even on a new car, and consider it something of a myth. All of these paints give a glossy finish. If you want the absolute best finish, you can use the base coat-clear coat system, which will cost you more money. An advantage of base-clear is that it can be color sanded and buffed with the proper equipment to a higher gloss than the single stage paints.

Nice tractor. I have yet to find a 300 or 350 that was worth buying and restoring. Most are too beat up. Do you notice a distinct orange tint to 2150? Mine come out that way, some people can't see it, others can. I used PPG Omni 71310. I have used 2150 to touch up with a brush on some of the cast. It is a perfect match, but both have that tint. Seems to differ between batches, even when supposedly mixed the same way. I have changed the toners slightly to avoid the tint, not completely successful yet.

This tractor was bought new by his Dad in 55 so it has a history with the family. The hood was pretty beat up and needed some welding and a lot of hammering. He did put some new parts on it before he brought it to me. I didnt notice notice any tint, but then I have a lot of green around here, lol, He went to the Case/International dealer and got the paint,

The "wet shiny look" is more a product of good surface prep and good spray techniques. All properly sprayed paint will lay out "wet" and "shiny" when sprayed. Like the post below said , keep it in out of the sun and weather to keep it that way. What i mean by that is you can definately go ahead and use it outside by all means. Just don't leave it out in the hot sun for days on end if not being used.

A polyurethane is as good as it gets. A non metalic single stage is super shiny and tough. You'll save money if you can find your color in a industrial line of paint instead of automotive.

Costs of paint was the main reason I quit painting cars. I've paid $600 just for a gal. of color coat for B.C.! I'd get the customer anger.
