Suggestions on sanding/prep of sheet metal

I have the hood and grill off my tractor.
Electrolysis to remove paint and rust.

I have sanded mostly down to bare metal with 220 grit with my orbital sander.

Next steps?

I was planning on Valspar restoration series with my HVLP gun.

This is a working tractor I am trying to prevent from rotting away.

Hey Dude;

Do you need to repair any rust damage or dents? If you need to do some welding, do it first. If using filler some will fill first and others will prime first. I'd use a good epoxy primer and it seals very good preventing rust. The down side is there is usually a window you must meet to apply the top coat. Usually 72 hours. If not applied within the window it must be scuffed and primed again. If you want a nice smooth finish prime with epoxy and then follow with a couple of coats of surfacer and then sand smooth, then top coat. Before primer or top coat use a good wax/degreaser such as PPG's DX 330 and wipe the metal down. Be sure not to leave any residual on the surface. You can search the archives for more from the experts.

I usually like keep paint forumulations together. IE.. us ethe valspar primer for their paint.

Greg;

Valspar makes an epoxy primer which should be compatible with their other products. I suggest epoxy because it is an excellent primer. For some that is all they use. Valspar makes other primers. Check the link below.

I agree with Soundguy that as a general rule you should not mix brands. With that said however, some do it with great success.
