Getting started painting

I have been all over the forums and still not certain on what to do. I have a small garage that I do all my worrk in on my tractors. I hae been working on a ford 8n and would like to paint it after I did some repair work on it. I have a 33 gallon oil free craftsman compressor but that is all as far as painting equipt so I will be looking to but some I know eceryone has there own ideas as far as paint goes I am jus tlooking to get it away ffrom bare metal and halfway look nice but it will be a working tractor so no need to get it all pretty to have it get scratched in a week. I am wondering about what kinda paint gun to get I havve looked at the set from east wood for arounfd $100 that is hvlp but my compressor does not have the cfm so need a hint on something reasonable as I dont plan on getting a new compressor I have the ford and 2 old lawn tractors to paint so don't want it to be something to cheap either. thanks

Have a look at one of the smaller "touch up" or "spot" guns available. An 8N is not a large tractor and if you do the painting in pieces, even the main chassis that way, you would not need a full sized gun. Perhaps one of the spot guns would be able to be serviced by your existing compressor. The largest single component on my AC model B is the main hood. I've used a spot gun very successfully on that. Even the main chassis can be masked off and done in parts. My rule of thumb is if I think I can cover any area with a single coat without having to refill the cup on the spot gun, my choice is almost always the spot gun. Refilling the gun cup between coats is not a problem. I just don't like to stop midcoat to refill it. Generally you can get down to the 2 or 3 cfm area with a spot gun. Compressed air storage is also your friend here. The time it takes for a single filling of a spot gun to be consumed may permit an air consumption in excess of compressor capacity for short periods, depending on available storage volume. The compressor can therefore be given some time to recover between actual spraying periods.

I have used a DeVilbiis touch up gun for 30 years. Put one new complete kit in it. It will do a nice double coat on about 3.5 square feet.

Well i decieded to try the CH spray gun set they have it has both touch up and full size and I can use both with the cfm requirments,do I need to put a water filter inline or do anything else before I start spraying?

put a water filter in the line and an air particle filter, napa had disposable ones that screw right on the gun for a couple dollars, also, if you have ever had a line oiler on the air line, dont use that line, it will fisheye like crazy. use a new hose for the paint gun.

I used one to paint an entire JD BN about 2 years ago. Worked great and about $8 on sale from Harbor Freight. My little 20 gallon compressor had to work a little bit, but I had to stop and take a breather too, so it wasn't too bad. Just do it in batches. I would make a cup of paint up and then pour a little in and go. Normally it would take about 3-4 refills to use up the paint.
