OT painting air cooled engine

fixing up an old motorbike for a friend. will painting the cooling fins on the engine reduce thier ability to cool the engine or is polishing the fins the only way to clean it up?

I used to ride English bikes and rebuilt a few. They sold a black paint that was supposed to be what the factory used. paint it and heat it up in an oven and it lasted . didnt have any overheating problems

I'd get them blasted with walnut shell medium.
Follow with hi-temp clear to keep oil stains away.

A lot of guys are going to powder coat for them now. You can get them done in any color you want.
