I am in the process of restoring a 1957 John Deere 720 tractor. I am thinking about using Rustoleum paint (JD Green) over Rustoleum primer. I have used Rustoleum products in the past on household projects with success, but never on a tractor. Does anyone have any experience with this paint?

Regular machinery enamels (like Rustoleum) will work OK but will eventually fade. If you can keep them out of the sun I've found you can get some more time out of the paint job but even in the shade the cheaper stuff seems to fade. The paint is still there mind you and it does protect the metal. Personally, unless the tractor is a showpiece, I don't see anything wrong with a little bit of fade on a tractor. I wouldn't think that original tractor factory paint jobs from the 40's and 50's used automotive quality paints.

I painted a trailer with Rustoleum Safety Red and it is fading bad. I will not use Rustoleum for a project like that again but still use it for small stuff. I would use a PPG paint or a JD product. I have a Farmall, couldn't help you with JD numbers or products. A lot of guys have used PPG Omni on their Farmalls and have had good results and a long lasting finish. Good paint will probably run about $150.00 a gallon but in the end will be worth it. Doc.
