Painting Aluminum (slightly OT)

After seeing the paint job I did on my truck, a friend from up the road asked me if I would be interested in painting his aluminum boat. What products and prep would I use compared to what I used with my truck? I used the Martin Senor Crossfire 2 stage for my truck with very good results.

Aluminium isn't the problem. Automotive paint doesn't like being submerged in water. I'dd pass, but if your determined, scuff the existing coating and use a marine paint. Prime only the raw spots.

Dupont had a II stage marine paint back in the 70's. My neighbor's next door to me had a sail boat and they bought that paint. They ask me about a painter and I told them to hire the painter I used to spray my cars. I would do the preparation and prime it then he would shoot it. The boat painting turned out well, but the boat owner made a big mistake when he winterize the boat. It had a 4 cylinder Continental engine
used when there was no wind and he didn't drain all the water from the block. He had to buy a short block and it was a big pain to remove the old engine and install the new engine. Hal

He only wants the sides done and for the most part they are above water so it might not be an issue. He is aware that boats take a fair amount of abuse so he just wants to freshen it up a bit.

A painter I know uses zinc chromate on all bare metal, including aluminum. He says it sticks better to the metal and then primes with regular primer over that, and then the paint.
