Painting Freshly Blasted Cast Aluminum

Just had a Deere 7600 Pedal Tractor professionally blasted for the little guy...now its time to prime & paint. What would you guys do?

A) Straight to Epoxy Primer (Definetly will sand out obvious casting defects) Prime & Paint..JP377 Epoxy Primer, topcoated with JAU Urethane.

B) Sand with D/A 80 or 100 grit first...same primer & Topcoat.

C) Prime with JP205 Polyester Primer/Filler, Topcoat w/JAU

Not looking for a show machine...this is gonna be a "Working Machine" for the little guy...but at the same time, I want a NICE working machine.

Spudland_Dave, I'm not sure about today's products such as self-etching primer and so on. I've been out of the biz for awhile, BUT, I use to prime all aluminum and pot metal products with a Zinc-Chromate primer before any other product applications. You should probably ask a reputable paint supplier.

Aluminum oxidizes when it hits the air and necessitates special handling, possibly even an aluminum wash.

Not trying to make a mountain here, but I’ve seen nice paint work blow right off of aluminum 'cause it wasn't prepped properly. Just say’n.....Good luck.

Dave, this is from the google guru's

Steel/metal has zinc in it and that is what the self etch primer grabs on to.

Aluminum has no zinc in it and needs zinc chromate applied.

Cast aluminum may or may not have zinc in it, depends on mfg.

You can buy self-etching zinc chromate epoxy primer. Etching primer contains phosphoric acid. A step better than etching primer is treating the part with a phosphoric acid solution, then priming with non-etching zinc chromate epoxy primer. One step further than that is to treat the part with chromic acid after the phosphoric acid clean/etch. Chromic acid treatment gives the part the yellow color you see on some aircraft parts.

use alodine to treat aluminum turns it a gold yellow then rinse and paint. otherwise it will corrode under the paint.
