Max Time to Paint After Primer

I've primered some parts a week ago, to some JD 70 Flexi planters being refurbbed. The parts were sandblasted clean, the primer is Van Sickle "super premium" brand from Atwoods. Do they need to be sanded, or can the paint be applied with satisfactory results? These aren't restoration quality jobs, just serviceable paint for working planters. A few previous posts I've looked at suggested a maximum recoat time of 72 hours for epoxy primers. The primer I used says recoat after 8-12 hours. Thanks. Mark

I don't know anything particular about the primer you used. However, "recoat time" can mean different things depending on what product you are talking about. The "maximum recoat time" for epoxy primers means a maximum time for decent chemical bonding with what goes over it. That can be different for different epoxy primers. For example, PPG's OMNI MP epoxy primer has a 72 hr max time for applying a product on top of it without scuffing and reapplication. Some DuPont epoxies have a 24 hr max time. Plus, PPG's DP epoxy has a seven day max time. When dealing with time periods, one needs to be very specific with the actual products being used and not generalize.

For non-epoxy primers, typically enamel-type primers, the "recoat period" is usually a safe minimum time for drying to avoid any wrinkling and lifting of the primer when a product is applied over it. Also, after such a period, scuffing of the primer is sometimes recommended to obtain a decent mechanical bond between the primer and the overcoat. It really should say on the can label but sometimes it does not.
