Sandblasting safty

Iam going to be sandblasting a 18ft. livestock trailer and an Allis WC tractor. I plan to blast outside on a 20x20 asphalt driveway with a tarp down ontop to cetch the sand to reuse. I plan to use my good respirator and safty glasses, my problem is iam doing this at my high school and a others in the class are suppose to help. If were blasting outside and iam the one running the machine do the others around watching need to have masks? and what kind of masks would be cheap but safe?

Keep the kids away. A charcoal mask is not adequate for filtering silica. I use supplied air and a hood. A "cheap" mask is worse than a charcoal mask. Once the sand particles break up, there is silica everywhere. Most people recommend sandblasting only empty removed parts on a tractor, as the sand gets into everything. Sorry to be negative, but sandblasting is dangerous without the proper safety equipment. Some sand even says "not for sandblasting" on the bag.

My resporator is good quality and will filter, just not recommended when blasting inside. This is in a big open area outside so with the right wind direction i personally will be fine.

How about with Black Beauty?

Sand is about $8-$10/80 lb bag. Black Beauty or similar products is close to $1 a pound. You can sweep the stuff up and reuse, but sand with the proper protection is a lot simpler.

NO, the sand will swirl around you, wind or not and be all over the place. If you read the instructions that come with your charcoal mask they will give very specific instructions for silica. It is sort of like isocyantes in hardener, the charcoal mask may work but it has to be new and fit perfectly, none do. As to a "quality" mask, charcoal masks are all about the same, except for the advertising.

The trailer iam doing for somebody else and that should only take 3 or 4 times. Iam buying black beauty for my tractor cause i like that much better and i think it safer. BUt iam not buying the trailer sand so i use what i got.

If iam doing it outside with a mask to stop "some" of the dust and i only do it for about 4 hours total spread out between a few days WILL THIS EXPOSOR CAUSE ME TO GET SICK????

Remember too that silica isn't your only concern.

Who knows what's in the paint that you're blasting.

There's a good chance that if it's old enough to need sandblasting, that it's old enough to be full of lead.

Lead is something you want to just keep kids away from, period.

The effects are cumulative -- I am not going to tell anyone whether that is one time or 500 times. What you are trying to do is not a good idea. Often times on this forum the one asking the question does not get the answer he wants. What you do is your decision, I am not responsible for it.

ve went and returned all the silica sand that was bought and got the black beauty instead.

My charcoal mask fits really well when I do a fit test. I have not used the fancy smoke type thing we used on the fire department, but when I covered the intakes it clearly sucks to my face and makes a seal. Maybe it is because I have a big head.

(quoted from post at 11:15:04 04/19/12) do you have a blasting hood to wear over your mask? etc?
Done 1 day of sand blasting, just 20min. to test the new blaster and stuff. I have a sandblasing hood from napa. just a red leather hood with a sheet of plexy glass to see out of. I put this over the top of my mask and safty glasses.

same here.. only I'm using aluminum oxide.

I am currently using a good spray paint mask with duel element cartridges.. but think I may swap to a even more form fitting neophrene flexible mask to get a better fit.

I'm sur ethe hood helps too...

No matter what media is used, silica or otherwise, breathing it is bad for you.

Blasting should be done with a supplied air respirator.

Black beauty(slag) is not as much safer than sand as some think. The dust isn't good to breath, and it may can contain metals or other things bad for you.
