I'm just getting ready to put my engine together for my F-20. I want to primer and paint all the smaller items so nothing gets left alone. I need to know if its best to prime and paint these smaller pieces with spray can, and what type of paint and primer are recomened. I want to use a PPG paint for the tractor but didnt know if theres equivelent spray can paint out there. This is my first restoration and I just want to make sure I get it right the first time. Thanks for your time. Shawn

Hi Shawn,

Why don't you do the small items with the exact same materials that you are going to use for the tractor proper? A two-part epoxy primer such as PPG OMNI MP-170 is about the best primer IMO. If you are going to use PPG paint anyway, that would be an excellent choice. For the small parts you might consider using the Preval Sprayer. It's cheap and you then can use the same primer and topcoat that you use in your main spray gun. That way there is no problem in matching color shades.

Thanks for the info, this is all new to me and I want this tractor to look as good as it hopefully runs. It hasnt run in 35 years so you can imagine I have a lot of painting to do. Thanks again. Shawn

Good luck on your project. I am sure it will turn out very nice. I forgot to add a link to the technical data sheet for the MP 170 epoxy primer.

MP 170 Epoxy Primer

Tech Sheets for All PPG Automotive Paints, Including the OMNI Line

I always recommend following the manufacturer's specific mix and application instructions that are provided on the tech sheets. That will assure the best resulting product with the least amount of problems.
