Need some paint advise

I intend on painting my 1586 this winter. The paint is solid but badly faded from 20 years of being sheddless. Think I will use stock Case/IH (Valspar) paint and primer from local dealer. Is this paint any good? Is it easy to spray and does it hold up over time? It is about 1/4 the cost of say a Dupont or PPG product. Partsman says it will out last any automotive brand and the original factory paint even without adding any type of hardener to the paint. I plan on lightly sanding the factory paint, then priming and repainting without hardener, as per dealer advise. Anyone have any thoughts on these theories?

If the old paint is still tight, very clean, and sanded well, you really don't need a primer coat over the old paint. I would only prime the bare areas and sand well before painting.

I would use a hardener in the paint. Two reasons for this: 1. The paint will shine better and hold up better under the elements. 2. Should anything go wrong during the painting process and part or all of the tractor needed to be painted again, you will not have to wait weeks for the paint to dry enough to sand and repaint. (Been there, done that. It ain't purty)

I have used quite a bit of CIH paint, most of it with hardner. It is a pretty good paint but it will not outlast automotive urethane paints but probably is better than the factory paint. Your plan for painting sounds pretty good just make sure you get it very clean before you start to sand or you will sand contaminants into the existing paint.
