I just bought a 49 A. It has a 60 head and duplex carb on it now. The club I plan on pulling with in farm stock says it is ok, but some others say I can not pull in farm stock because of the head. I plan on installing an A head this winter, but am not sure wicth one. At the moment I have 138psi in each cylinder. Would a lpg head give more compression than a gas head? Can I do some work to a head for better perfomance? I am new to this aand I want to be competive in 5500 to 6500 class. Any and all help and sugestions would be appreciative. THANKS BUDD

If your 49 A has a single stick shifter, which I think they do. You will have a 1.5 mph. first gear. Keep your money in the bank, use first gear and on a good power track , no stock G JD will touch you. I have seen alot of stock G's fall flat on their face in the 6500 on a good biting track. A late A will turn 18.4 x 38 tires all the way through 7500. And sometimes run out of power in 8500. Good Luck.

A STOCK JD-A OUT PULLING A STOCK JD-G? IF IT HAPPENS IT A RARE THING, AND THE GUY WITH THE G DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TUNE IT PROPERLY. I HAVE, AND PULL BOTH AN A-JD AND A JD-G AND THE A HAS MORE IN IT (MOTOR WISE) THAN THE G, MY A IS A LONG SHOT TO OUT PERFORM THE G ON THE PULLING TRACK 5500# - 7500#. JUST MY 2 CENTS FROM PULLING BOTH AN A & G JD.

A stock G will have more HP than the A. But the late A with the 1.5 MPH 1st gear will put more torque to the axle than the G will. In a stock class wheel speed isn`t an issue. I`ll still take the late A over the G on a good biting track. I also saw a late B with the slow 1st gear beat a 88 Oliver in the 5500 stock class this summer.

I pull with an A jd and it pulls well from 6500 to 12000 weight class. in the 5500 it is to light mine puts out about 50 hp and I though it was stock when I bought it but it can not be stock and all I did was put a big nut carb on it but that made a big differance. I pull with g and and do pretty good let me know how you do and also an A is cheaper to make an puller out of that is mine to cents

Try to find a Heisler Head. Better flow.
Find a 620 or 630 cam. Run a #51 big nut G carb.
With .125 over, you should have about 52 hp.
Good Luck!

shave .125 off the head, and .125 off the block, make sure you have .090, or .125 aluminum pistons in it, and you'll have about 150-170 psi. FYI-they never made a lp JD A.

this should give you around 42-45 horse

A Puller; No LP, shows I'm a newbe uh! Why aluminum and not cast? What can I do with the valves? What can I do for a carb work? I know the saying "Speed cost money, how fast do ya want to go". I have done some HP things with small block Chevys, so I am not completely lost. I am trying to pick everybodys brain a little and then I will decide how I want to do my A. All the JDs in our group are Gs. I bought this A to be a little different, knowing going in I would be the under dog. So all info will help. THANKS AGAIN BUDD

Port and polish the head, and you can put oversized valves, but we have never done it to any of our tractors. Aluminum pistons are lighter, and will create more power. You also can run more rpm with aluminum, less stress. What year is your A? If it has a fast low, you may want to stroke it. I've heard of A's with 8" stroke, we only went 7 with ours, has .045, and a little cam, and we had 55hp. It handled low a-ok in the 6500, killed in the 7500. If you want, put a G carb on it, but, we havn't done this either. I have been told that it doesn't make any differance on the dyno though. THe guy said it just drank more fuel. SO, I guess it depends on how far you want to go with it. A puller

OR YOU CAN GET AN A POWERBLOCK AND BORE TO 6.125" (STOCK STROKE) AND PUT ALUMINUM HIGH COMPRESSION PISTONS IN IT, MILL BOTH THE BLOCK AND HEAD, PORT THE INTAKE AND HEAD, THREE ANGLE VALVE JOB, AND BIG NUT G CARB. MY 47 JD-A DYNO'S 54HP WITH THIS SETUP, AND I PULL 4500#-6500# WITH PLENTY OF POWER. BUT IT IS NO MATCH FOR MY 90 OVER (ALUMINUM PISTONS)JD-G WITH A FLAT HEAD THAT DYNO'S AT 70HP AND PULLS 5000#-7000# AND DOES QUITE WELL ALSO.
