I am going to build or buy a gooseneck trailer to haul several tractors. I also know of a 1977 ford L9000 fire engine with a 8v71 detroit and a 5 speed. It is low miles and good shape. If I could get it cheap I was thinking of stripping it,(of course I'd leave the light bar and siren on it) and making a gooseneck trailer puller out of it. I think it would cost less than a ton truck and have more power and better brakes. I was wondering what the fuel mileage might be? Thanks

Grandpa has a 8V71 in his Brigadier GMC and it really cranks. It may not be what a 3406 CAT is, but it is strong and geared to haul heavy equipment. I think it may get about 8 mpg empty or with a light load. Awesome sounding engine with loud pipes on it.

We have a Peterbilt 359 tandem rollback that we haul a pair of JD 720 diesels on. The gross weight is around 50,000 lbs. With low gearing and an 8V71, we get between 5 & 6 mpg. I doubt that a fire truck has any higher gearing and would do any better.

I don't remember the rpms but I think it's against the governor between 65 and 70.

We are done at 65 mph @ 2100 rpm. I need to set the rpm up a bit but haven't taken the time. Those motors will run at 2500 forever without any problems. You would be surprised how much more power they have when you up the rpms.
