Hey Guys:

I'm wanting to uprate the power of my JD 435 when I rebuild it. I'm wanting to go to N series specs with 2 sizes larger injectors. I'd also like ot go to a 4 valve head. What all needs changed to go from a 2valve to a 4 valve head? Where can I find a used 4 valve head for a 2-53 detroit?

Did these tractors ever make for very good pullers? Does anyone have any pictures of them? What are the best classes to pull them in? Has anyone ever mounted a turbo atop the blower on this small of an engine for a real power house?

Thanks,

John

There are upgraded springs from DD for the cam followers and valve springs. The blower oil seal is upgraded with a cutter and new design seal. 2400rpm is about it. A four valve head is rated for 2800rpm. The HD ring and pinion from a JD 1010 prior to serial number 31,000 bolts right in. Use the low speed/high ration set for 15% speed reduction. The final drive reduction gears can be swapped in from a post 31,001 JD model 1010. That's another 15% speed cut. Now you can pull in 2nd or 3rd gear instead of 1st or 2nd and not bust anything. Reverse is now slow enough to be usable too. Tough competing against other brands wearing 38" rear tires when the 435 has 13.6x28" or the narrow 11.2x 34's if stock sizes are required. The torque curve is very flat. Once she's overloaded the rpms drop fast as there is no torque increase when lugged. Front end is awful heavy. Tough getting ideal weight transfer. I have won a few pulls and placed well but it takes some extra planning and attention to details.

I've never seen this, but always thought someone should build one. A neat noise will come out of that contraption! How light can you strip it down to?

They weighed about 3500# from the factory. You could probably lose 500# on it with going to pressed steel wheels removing hitch components and Is it possible to install a tricycle front end from a 420 or 430?

The power is the easy thing on detroits, it's just getting everything else to stand it.

John

I think you will find that there is not near enough tractor behind that 2-53 to handle the power that it is capable of without a turbo. From what I understand, much more than 40 hp and the rear won't stay together. There are ways around that, but you will then just find the next weakest link.

They are awesome little machines, especially with a straight pipe. They sound like a fish tank pump with the muffler on them.
