I've been reading all of this stuff and I don't have a dog in the hunt. Why not 3mph speed limit and go with that? Of course you'd also want the limit on tire size, non-cut tires, drawbar height/length, etc. I understand that speed has an advantage, but not at 3mph. That's why you don't see huge cube Molines, Ollies, Cases, Farmalls, etc. pulling light classes 3mph. At least I've not seen it. You might see it in the 8500 lb. range and up, or you might have the huge cube 2-banger Deere, but I've not seen any advantage with that either. These guys pulling tractors in the 8 and 12mph classes won't pull in a 4mph class most of the time because of the fear of being embarrassed by a "slowpoke." I don't blame them either. If my tractor pulled 8 and 12mph, that's where I'd be. I've been beat by tractors that will go 8mph, but it wasn't because they will go 8mph. It was due to many other factors, i.e., tires/traction, improper balance of my tractor, choosing a bad line on the track, etc. Two weeks ago, I stood my tractor straight up and still was only 6 feet out of first place. My tires were sticking like glue. I had a good line but misjudged my weight placement. At 336 cubes, I was probably the smallest tractor in the class, but I think I would have won that class if I would have placed my weights correctly. It was a 4mph class with some tractors that will make 8mph easily. Speed limits don't kill the monsters, but it injures them more than any other weapon I can think of.
