I have a 1954 JD 40-S. In the process of restoring. The new muffler did not come with a mounting gasket and engine gasket kit did not include such a gasket either. My manifold has been resurfaced, but without a gasket here, an exhaust leak is guaranteed. My old muffler/manifold joint had leaked, you could tell by the soot tracing. Has anyone resolved this and I missed it?

I replaced the muffler on my 40 and found a gasket through one of the tractor parts suppliers. Now I just need to remember who that was...but they are available. I coated it up with antiseize to help seal and it seals fairly tight. Plus the muffler does bounce around at all.

Let me know if you remember where you got that gasket. I was thinking after I posted the original question that maybe a properly sized "donut" gasket would work. I measure tonight and the manifold ID is 2". I might give that a try if the parts store has a 2" OD donut ring.

I searched for an exhaust system donut gasket with a 2" OD that would fit snugly in the manifold, but did not have any luck finding one smaller than about 2 3/8" OD. Instead I purchased a solid brass lifting ring from Tractor Supply. The ring is 2" OD and rests on the seat inside the manifold, mount the muffler and tighten the 2 flange bolts. I am hoping that this will eliminate the blow-by and force all of the exhaust out the muffler. I will continue to search for a regular donut gasket of the proper size because I still believe that would be the best fix. I also still believe that this is a common problem that others encounter, evidenced by the smut under the hood.
