We have a 66 passenger school bus that makes a dandy chicken coop. You can haul it about the field to insure that the chickens have fresh grass and it is very secure against predators.
Just need to find one without a lot of rust.

We have a 16 X 20 chicken house. It is divided down the long end into two sections. On one side we have divided that into two sections. One for our 14 layers and one for raising fryers, etc.

The nest box is the thing I get the most compliments on. It actually "hangs" on the wall jutting out into the open area. On the chicks side there is a 4inch lip for them to jump up on. There is a lid on the parlor side of the nest box and we simply lift that to pick up the eggs without going into the chicken side. Very handy. We hung cloth across the front of the nest box to give the girls some privacy. It's about 18 inches off the floor. The little kids that visit love to go lift that lid looking for eggs.

My hens got spoiled, being free range. If I try cooping them up, they"ll stop laying within a week.

I just let"em go...

We have about 25-30 laying hens, and our chicken coop is 12' x 24' with a single slope shed roof. Windows with screen covering along one side, and a regular combination storm unit for the walk through door. Don't forget a small opening for the hens, with a door that can be closed at night. We have a 10" exhaust fan (from Graingers) that works good on really warm days, otherwise just a old box fan hanging from the rafters keeps enough air moving during the summer.
Fresh water is important. Besides a 5 gal. poultry waterer in the coop, we buried a 1/4" plastic underground line to a self-filling hanging fountain outside the coop. The hens really seem to enjoy it. The best investment we've made has been a $3 egg washer at an auction. Takes the chores out of what was a real chore!

TnT,

Don't have any plans but I could take a pic or two of mine to send to you if you'd like. E-mail if interested.

Build it at least 10' x 20' so you can use it for a tractor when you have had enough eggs, fried chicken, and gumbo.

We've made ours with whatever was available. Chickens can't take hot weather too well so ventilation is a must. If not a fan then some screens to let air flow through. If possible build it under or near a shade tree. Can't be too "open" or critters will get in and eat feed/eggs/chickens. An eight foot ceiling is helpful but not required. Might try the local county extension agent for plans. Egg production goes down when the heat is up.

None of my business, but if you build a coop and use a solid door be sure to knock before entering to let the girls know you are coming. In the 30's and 40's I grew up on a chicken ranch with 5000 white leghorn layers. They are possibly the most flighty of all breeds. We never could allow straingers in the chicken houses and could never enter without knocking,or more than half the flock would hit the ceiling and then go into a molt and loose lots of feathers. That would often drop egg production about 50% for the next four to six weeks. Been there an seen that. You likely will not find this in a text book.
