Inversion table- Herniated Disc

MY wife has a herniated disc and has been to several doctors and chiraprators with limited relief. We are wondering if anyone has used a inversion table for this condition and what were the results? Shes willing to try anything for pain relief. Thanks

It worked great for me. I was so bad I had to get a motorized one so I could invert it. Now I can do most everything without any pain. Still need to use it from time to time when things start feeling “wrong”. Placed over 100 60# bags of ready-mix for riprap and ride the tractor over very rough terrain bush hogging. Best money I ever spent.

I went the same route that your wife has went. No table though. I ruptured my disc april, 2005. 4 chiro's-- nothing. 2 epidurels-- nothing. Very long and painful summer. 8 hour day at work just about killed me. Went to the University of Iowa Hospitals on october 11. Had back surgery october 18 at 2:15 pm, the next day I walked out by 11:30 am... NO pain! Haven't been back to work yet, weight restriction of 20 pds. I work in a machine shop, used to lift 40-50 pds. all day long. Go back to work jan. 2. Best thing I ever did.

some physical therapists specialize in disc problems. Make sure they are McKenzie trained

Had surgery on my lower back 5 1/2 years ago for disc problems. Was at the point that I could not stand or sit without extreme pain. Left hospital at 10 am day after surgery and haven't had problem since.

Be very cautious of spinal fusion. My dad had that done about 2 yrs. ago and his back is as bad or worse than it has ever been. Two people at our church have had a fairly new procedure done with disc replacement. Both of them have done extremely well. One of them was playing basketball with us about 7 months after surgery and is back to work as a mail carrier.
Because of the spinal fusion the doc says that dad is no longer a candidate for disc replacement and he is pretty much going to have to live with his back the way it is. I would steer clear of fusion if you can.

im real sorry to her about your wifes pain i wouldnt wish that on anybody thanks to a chiropractor i spent 4 months in a recliner till i couldnt stand the pain anymore and went to hospital took an mri for 40 minute had to do a leg lift i couldnt lay flat i ended up getting the same nerosurgen my dad had walked into the hospital the next day after seeing the doctor he rushed me right in walked with a cane at a 45 degree angle six hours later i walked out of the hospital with no pain at all it cost me @$12,000.00 for the operation it takes about 1 1/2 years for your back to get back in shape then this year i overdid it and it put me right down on the floor thought i was gonna have to get another operation went to the doctor got some vicodin that cut the pain enough i could get around the house luckily just resting my back i came out of it good luck and happy holidays

Robert, I had a herniated disk that eventually had to be clipped. Surgeon said no to inversion table. Shots did no good. @ 6months after discectomy disk is deteriorating and now bone on bone. Waiting for spinal fusion. I've heard that acupuncture works for some, didn't for me.

At risk of provoking flames, be extremely careful about chiropractic manuipulation and/or "popping" the spine; esp. if you have known bad discs. I have seen more than one disc actually "blown" by such procedures. Epidurals are currently one of the best non surgical procedures we have. If your wife had relief with an epidural (even once) there is a good chance that repeating this will reduce or releive her pain (6 days, 6 weeks, 6 mos, that is the question) The underlying problem will still exist. An inversion table is thought to relieve pressure on the nerve by using the bodys weight(and graity) to mechanically lift the bad disc off the nerve root. It might help, but should be done only with assistance, and with proper instruction. (try to get MD to order physical therapy, they should be able to assist depending on the therapists skills). Also take your meds as ordered espeically the antiinflammatorys, this reduces the swelling more than any other meds (except prednisone, which is what the spinal injection basically is)Every case is different but it sounds like your doc is following good medical precedure and trying to help you avoid surgery.

I use to have a lot of back problems. Had the injections LESI which sometimes helped. Osteopathic physicial did xrays, said one leg was a little shorter than the other (OK, I"ve heard all those jokes), now I wear a pad in the heel of one shoe. No problems for almost 5 years. But, back to your question about inversion tables. They can help a lot, but don"t use one alone. I have been stuck on one, nothing wrong with the table, it just hurt so bad to come back upright that I couldn"t stand to do it.

I think the upside down will make too much blood rush to my head. I keep thinking of building a version of a medievil rack. Didn't Learch have one on The Adams Family ? Went to a Chiropractor once that had some machine that lightly pulled on you like that and ran rollers up and down your back. Wish I could find one of those cheap and use it every day.

Robert, I have used one for the past 25-30 years, best money I ever spent. My back is to far gone now for mine to help much, but there was times it would remove all the pain. You don't have to hang upside down by the ankles for it to work, just a good steep angle. Inversion tables are not kid proof, but will last for years if used correct. Don't wait, get the table, the wife will glad you did.

MY wife has had 2 epidurnals the first one helped with the pain but the second one did very little. She is getting a 3rd next week. Also an appointment with a neurolgist sp" next week , she has never been sick in 55 years and just wants some relief. Getting old sucks ..

If your wife really has a herniated disk, the last person in the world that she should be consulting is a chiropractor. You better get her to a medical doctor as soon as possible. Forget the hocus-pocus of alternative "medicine".

I myself have had herniated disk surgery at level s1.After trying "crank doctors" for 2 years I can say that i'm now pain free

I have a 5 level fusion. Worst mistake I made was playing with 'cures'. I should have done the surgery when it was one disc not 2. I'm much improved after 2 years but if I had done the surgery when it was at 1 level I'd be better off today.
Do the real thing, don't play with it.

I've had two herniated disc's so know your wifes pain ,,,It took a long time for it ot heal and now when It gives me issues Manaul traction is only thing that gives pain relief... inversion table "MAY" help..Chiropractor did NOT help me ,,but took my money ...THose tables have other health benefits as well as taking strain off the joint ,,it is helpful with your internal organs and such ,,now this was told by yoga instructor ,not a Medical doctor ,,,so take it for what it's worth ,,,
