I have a Pettibone LDA/MDA, but believe this question is more generic to hydraulic functioning. My boom cylinder hesitates up to 10 seconds after I engage the control lever and before it moves. Problem is specific to that cylinder. All others appear to have "normal" response and power. Logic says it could be the control lever or the cylinder itself. Anyone have any insight as to possible causes? Air in the line? Defective valve? Thanks. JJK

I've got the same machine - 1967 Pettibone "Multi-Hoe LDA with the 3-53 Detroit and Allison trans. I've had the same problem with it and also my little Ford 4000 hoe. It was the cylinder packings. You really notice it with the Pettibone since the boom cylinder is pretty d*mn big. I had to torch access holes in the boom to get the hoses off, to get the cylinder out. Fixing the boom cylinder on that thing is not a lot of fun.

JD. Thanks for comments. Esp regarding how to pull that cylinder. I actually had the other two cyliners repacked two years ago (easy access). They work fine. Didn't attemp to pull this bad boy. Guess its time. We've exchanged mail before over this forum regarding the Pettibone. I have the same make, model and year as you. Luck. JJK

I've got the factory "manual" for it if you ever need any info. It's pretty crude though, in fact some of the diagrams in it are hand-drawn.

Pettibone backhoe???? I've never seen one.. Hydraulics are hydraulics no matter what machine they're on..Your problem with the boom hydraulics are consistant with either boom cylinder packings or circuit relief valve. I would check cylinder packing condition first by disconnecting a hose from the cylinder and capping the hose. then power the other line. If the cylinder packings are shot , you will get a constant flow of oil from the open fitting on the cylinder. If no constant flow is observed , I would go to the circuit relief valve for problems

Thanks for comments. I will run some tests and comment back on findings. I suspect you've nailed it with the packing. The Pettibone LDA/MDA is an 8 ton machine. Great workhorse with a 36 inch bucket. I need to keep her running. There are at least two others in this tractor forum who own Pettibone backhoes.
