What's the best brush hog out there? Is it the Woods BrushBull, is it Bush Hog, the Bush Hog Squealer? (what a name for a piece of heavy rotating machinery! If I heard my brush hog squealing, I'd take it to the shop right away or if it was new, back to the dealer), is the best the John Deere rotary cutters? Rhino, Howse, Just wondering.

Some people don't like the skip welds on Woods mowers. Every Woods mower I've looked at, that would be about four on the dealers lot and one really big one at the airport, have them. I don't know if it makes any difference but John Deere and Land Pride use continuous welds. I use a Land Pride 6' RCR 25-72. A good mower rated to cut 3" material. My current choice would be a John Deere Heavy Duty 709.

For a really heavy duty mower look at the FMC tire drive Sidewinder mowers. We have a 78" wide pull type model that's spent most of it's life behind a 150hp tractor and we haven't broke anything on it yet. They are rated to mow off anything your tractor will push over, I've mowed off 8" diameter trees with it but it's a slow process.

What do you plan on cutting with it?
I can tell you as far cutting matterial thickness is concerned the Brown 672, and the Bushhog 406 is the heaviest duty bushhoggs I know of. They can cut up to 4 inch trees. Also Look at the Browns Tree cuttter MAN!!! that thang is an absolute BEAST!!!! I think Rhino makes a bushhog that will cut 4 inch trees as well. But I know the Brown 672, and the Bushhog 406 are the toughest!!

I basically cut weeds and very light brush with mine, but was wondering which hogs were regardd as the best built. Mine is supposedly suitable for cutting 5-inch brish, but I couldnt imagine cutting 4 or 5 inch trees, just getting the tractor over the trees and then the racket. I have some areas I'd like to do that way but am afraid there are too many rocks.

Rhino makes a model called Lumberjack, which actually has a door that opens up hydraulically in the deck so you can back into trees atleast 4" in diameter and cut them down.

yeah but brown is more well know at doing this type of stuff as apposed to Rhino. I would stay with the Browns Tree cutter over the one for Rhino.

I see the Highway Department using Schulte brand bush hogs for right of way mowing. Thats pretty rough use and they seem to stand up well. Believe they are made in Canada.

There are lots of good ones out there. I have looked at JD's MX series brushhogs, and those look pretty good. I know Rhino and Bush Hog make some super heavy duty cutters, but for the price of one I could get several of their medium duty cutters. I went with a medium duty Rhino 6' last year, model TW72 for $2,300 new. No problems yet!. Hey, Massey Fergueson is now offering brushhogs again, and the heavy duty 6' model is built exactly identical to my old Massey Furgueson that I had before this Rhino, and that one was pretty darn rugged, I could have gotten one of those for $2,000. All the brands put out heavy duty, a medium duty, and a light duty, if you buy one that too light for what you need then your not going to be very happy with it and it will end up destroyed in very short order, so buy one that will fit your needs.
Howse is pretty much an off brand, and you won't find as much quality in those as most other brands, but thats also why Howse is cheaper and they have their place in just cutting clean grass and light brush. My Rhino TW72 came with a 5yr gearbox warranty too, which was the best warranty I had found.
Hope this helps,

I have pulled 15' BushHog's, wood's, and Rhino. All of them did a real good job for me. Seem's like you get what you pay for. The cheaper they are the crappier they cut and the shorter they last.

The one that does what you need it to do, at a price you can afford, is the best one.

I'll second that! I've had a 5' king kutter for 10 years. Paid 425 for it and other than shear pins I've had no trouble from it. mowed stuff up to 2" with it. Also found out it is a great rock finder.

Yup! My older-than-dirt JD 5' hog cost me $25 because the guy I got it from thought it was toast. He told me it needed several hundred $$$ to fix it. I spent less than $20 on some common "off-the-shelf" parts and it has been going strong for 5 years. Pull it behind my 8N and have zipped 2" cedars with it without even noticing. I also have broken a FEW shear bolts, but all but 2 or 3 were with a larger tractor, and 90% were when I first got the mower. I have only broken 1 this year behind the 8N. Takes about a minute to replace.

I have heard the Rhono's were pretty good but havent seen too many up here. Most here seem to be Woods, Bush Hogs, Squealers, and a few John Deeres. I saw a mack truck loaded with John Deere bushogs pull into the local dealer the other day, so I presume these are selling pretty good.

JDknut, Sorry to be late in responding. Rhino bought out the old Service Shredder Co mqny yrs ago. The Service Shredders were one tough bulitproof shredder.
The SR-15M That I pull I REQUIRE more of a shredder that it should do on any regular basis. It will last the average farmer/rancher a very long time. We have been in a pasture reclamation mode for te last 3 yrs. The Flats/Medows have gotton overgrown with brush/ small to med trees and this shredder haad help reclaim over 100 acres of brush and returned it to grass production.
Brush Hogs, JDs are both very good shredders no complaints, both will give outstanding sercice.
My experience with Woods..... I wouldn't haul one home it you gave it to me. Too light built, will not stay together. Good Luck.
Later,
John A.

I have a Woods R105 tow-behind and it makes a very good cut and is very heavily built. I think that Woods is among the best. A couple guys I know have a Bush Hog Squealer, but they look lighter built.

Bush Hog builds a very good machine. The "squealer" is the light duty, consumer model. It is not meant for heavy duty use.
