Never saw one die this way. After about 18 miles of running 55 mph, oil light comes on with some engine noise/vibration, shut down engine. Temp normal, oil level Full- changed oil and filter about 2 weeks ago, no leaks. 2.3L 1992 4 cyl, less than 75,000 miles, no smoke. I 'suspect' the oil pump gave up/sheared, any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a timing belt. Will it turn over, if it does it will sound kinda funky. Also try pulling the timing belt cover and check the belt.Did you ever have it changed?

Checked oil again, full, coolant good, started up with an oil light on and valve train chatter. Didn't want to run it much before something else started messing up. I used a Purolater oil filter so it "shouldn't" be the problem, buuuttt..... Thanks again for the help, it is much appreciated! P.M.

I thought that was a 1.9? Anywho, A buddy of mine had one that the OIL FILTER wasnt right or something. Ill ask him, but Im sure it was something to do with the filter not being made right or the book had the wrong filter or something like that.

We had a '91 Tempo that my Dad put 110,000 on before he gave it to my wife. She put another 50,000 on it and I traded it to a junkyard for a jack and lug wrench from a BMW... Pretty good trade, the engine in that car was still good but the body was falling apart. It had a 3spd auto and on the highway it wailed like the devil.

Your symptoms may or may not be due to fuel starvation. My experience with a like vehicle (Tempo) would indicate that with this mileage the fuel pump may be due to fail. I replaced one with the lowest price NAPA pump available and that replacement lasted only about 10,000 miles. That was replaced with their better grade of pump. The details are fuzzy but the pump is a little tricky to diagnose because there are some timing devices that shut off power to pump if engine does not start and run. The Fords have the fuel pump safety switch in the trunk area, it is designed to open, when rear ended. That is one of the first things to check when there is a fuel problem. I have helped Ford owners limp home by just slamming the trunk lid,in the event of fuel pump failure. This may work because worn brushes in the pump motor reconnect. If you have spark, the timing drive is being driven, though it could have jumped out of time. The Ford 2.3 overhead valve engine, (not overhead valve with overhead cam) does not have a timing belt. It has a chain instead; I have not heard that this was an engine weakness. As far as I know none of the 2.3 Fords had an interference engine and therefore would not be destroyed in the case of timing drive failure. I expect 150,000 miles from newer 2.3 engines and 200,000 from the newer overhead cam engines.

I had a 1992 Tempo with a 2.3 once. It was handed to me when my F-I-L died. No one else in the family needed it. It had 105K on it at the time. I used it as a commuter for several years. Finally when it stopped with 175K on the odometer when Bambi's father jumped in front of it one dark winter's night. It was a good car for me. The only problem I ever had was the harmonic balancer came apart. That was about a $300 repair.

Thanks for the replies! I first thought the belt too, but it's a "pushrod" engine, (Not the 2.3L of Ranger fame), with a timing chain, and overhead valves. This one may be on its way to china.

That happened to my 1993 Escort a few years back. 65 mph down the Interstate and it just died. Called the towtruck, he pulled the oil cap and had me crank the engine while he looked for movement in the head. He was right, it was the timing belt. A quick tow to his shop and $200 later and I was on my way.

Somewhere around 1990 or so, can't remember, any way, they changed the design of that head.

Prior to that, when the belt went, so did the valves. In a "bending fashion". :>)

All ya gotta do is crank the thing and you can hear the lack of compression.

Dunno,

It's too early in the morning and my pee-brain is still full of cobwebs.

However, when I hear the words: '2.3L Ford', it just "screams" timing belt to me.

Let us know what ya find?

Allan

Yup 70-80K on a 2.3. At one point they added an extra plug per cylinder to attempt to put a stop to this. Usually burns a hole right through the top of a piston. Been down this road more than once with Tempos and Rangers. Thats amazing to me to only have that few miles on a 15 year old car.

You never can tell - I had 180,000 of hard, hard farm miles on my 1992 F-250 with a 351. It didn"t use oil and had good oil pressure.

I was running down the highway full bore when it started clattering.

I suspected it threw a rod - I was really surprised when we opened it up - a piston had broken in two pieces... No reason that I know of - except just plain wore out...
