I have a HP Photosmart C4280 All in one printer. It's been working great till today. I want to print a picture from Windows Photo Gallery, and when I pick the picture and click print, a box comes up that says I need to install a printer. I go out of there and go to e-mail and pick one and click print and it prints out the e-mail. Why won't it print pictures? Should I unplug printer and plug it in again and let it reinstall? I have printed lots of pictures and never had this happen before. Or should I shut down computer and restart? HELP!!!! Chris

Printers are strange. I have an HP 3745 that literally went berzerk once. I called HP and the gal said to turn the power off, pull the power plug, and hold the Off/On button down for 30 seconds. Then plug it back in.

I wondered how anything could be fixed with the power cord unplugged, but I tried it. With no power to the unit, I held the ON button down. After a few seconds you could hear something carrying on inside the printer. After 30 seconds, I plugged it back in and it was fine.

When your computer “boots up”, there is a special file that tells your operating system the hardware that is physically connected and available for use.

Your software programs (Windows Photo Gallery, e-mail) depend on the operating system for “instructions” on what hardware is available.

Since you were able to print your photo with your email program, that indicates your email program was “paying attention” to the instructions of your operating system.

The Windows Photo Gallery for some reason was not “paying attention” to the operating system’s instructions and gave you an incorrect response ( error message ).

You did the right thing by restarting or “rebooting” your computer.

Similar situation exists when I do not pay attention to my favorite wife’s instructions and give her an incorrect response.

Hope this helps.

Larry's advice is good. Also, sometimes just turning off the printer and turning it back on again works. I have not had a lot of printer troubles, but when they do give trouble they can be very frustrating.

Always restart the machine and try again before worrying too much.

OK, That fixed it. Sorry, restart always seem to be the last thing I think of to try. Thanks for the help. Chris
