Sounds like you've got a slow leak on the live pump output shaft seal. It's a good idea to renew both seals on the pump while you've got it off.

Removing the pump without disturbing the timing is straight forward: Mark on the distributor housing the location of the #1 cyl plug wire tower, then remove the distributor cap. Now turn the crankshaft by hand until the dist rotor is lined up with the mark you made on the dist housing, AND the TDC notch in the fan pulley is aligned with the pointer on the timing gear cover. The motor's now at TDC #1 cyl firing.

Remove the hose manifold from the hyd pump and swing it aside, and remove the primary wire from the coil. You can now unbolt the pump/distributor assembly and pull it off the motor.

To reinstall the pump simply reverse the above steps. Make sure that when the pump is back in place the dist rotor is again aligned with the mark you made on the dist housing. And DO NOT crank the motor with the pump removed - otherwise you'll have to find #1 TDC again.
