I've found it best to replace the friction disks before they've worn to the point the radial grooves have completely disappeared. While you've got the brakes apart, THOROUGHLY clean all the components with a degreasing solvent like paint thinner or aerosol brake cleaner. If the iron friction surfaces are glazed, sand them as required to remove all glaze, then degrease the surfaces again. Also disassemble the intermediate discs and clean the balls and ball ramps. Lube the ball ramps lightly with powdered lube (dry graphite or moly disulfide) before reassembling the disks. Finally thoroughly clean (wire brush) the disk drive splines and coat them with a film of grease before reassembling the brakes.
