Wire brushing is your best bet, like the other guys said, the sand gets into every nook and cranny. The brass wire brushes seemed to hold up better then the steel ones on my project. Also, 3M makes a paint stripper wheel that looks like a webbing material, it's black, it didn't last very long, but it strips the paint down faster than the wire wheel, and kinda expensive too. Sorry I don't have any pics of it, I plan on adding the tools to my web page later...
