Slow and low power as you stated usually means lack of fuel, you have gas to carb. check carb. inlet screen filter, then if not o.k. open carb. bowl drain and see if it maintains a steady stream of gas, if it doesn't float needle is not working right. As for back firing if it didn't before you worked on ignition I would say you have crossed plug wires and if distributor was removed could have been installed out of time.
