You are polaring the generator so that it will correctly charge the battery observing the direction the battery is installed....either neg. or pos. ground and not reverse of what you want. A good practice is to remove the BAT and the FLD wires from the regulator and then momentarily contact the two wires. Shorting the bat. terminal to the gen. field terminal should be avoided as it can cause too much field current to flow through the reg.
