DCW, For one thing if its a 12 volt system YOU SHOULDNT USE AN EXTERNAL BALLAST RESISTOR if its really a true full 12 volt rated coil UNLESS its a coil thats labeled "12 volts for use with an external Ballast Resistor" No wonder the coil never gets hot !!! cuz if its really a 12 volt coil and you added an external ballast resistor youre only running something like 1/2 the current through it thats its designed to handle PLUS that causes a weak spark and poor running.

Check the coil and if its really a true full 12 volt (internallay ballasted) coil then THROW OUT THE BALLAST and you should get a hotter spark and better performance. Of course, if its a 6 volt coil then you need the ballast.
