I don't think it's funny because of the way a person's private economics come into play. Their tractor sale is probably one of only a very few such sales in their area, if not the only one. Same for the buyer. There has been no large dynamic number of transactions to give cues as to the true value. Most of the other components of valuation have not been done by the "market" and those personal valuations then take more time, leading to such terms as "fair," "maybe," "good price," etc. If 500 tractors like yours traded in your town every day, the seller and the buyer wouldn't have much input in deciding the price, and the offer and ask prices would be more confidently displayed and given more unequivocally.
