My John Deere (Yanmar) 750 has a one-piece pleated paper cartridge-type element. I clean the precleaner cup and thump the dirt out of the paper element a couple of times per summer, and replace the cartridge every spring. The filter is somewhere around $12-$15, so I don't sweat it. Besides increased noise, what would the symptoms of too much valve lash be on a diesel? I have no reason to suspect mine is off, it runs just like new, starts like a champ, pulls like an ox and sips fuel like a debutante. Just curious, mostly.
