I also am working on a '48 M. As you said, grilles
are no longer available. You can purchase screens from:

Restoration Supply Co.
(508) 533-4964 ($15 I think?)

Before you buy anything, I highly suggest that
you subscribe to:

Green Magazine
(402) 643-3912 or,
http://www.cnweb.com/green

This magazine comes out monthly ($25 per yr)
and is devoted exclusively to John Deere. There
will be feature tractors, how to articles, and classified ads (many salvage yards) where you may find a better grille. Several ads for M parts (gauges, grille screens, seat backs, etc.) can be found there.
